Located in the heart of Chip Bee Gardens in Holland Village, Bynd Artisan is a business which offers personalised bookbinding services. Continuing the age old tradition of making books by hand, Bynd Artisan believes in using only the finest quality of materials such as Europe-sourced leather and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper. The process of designing your own personalised book involves first choosing between different materials for the covers and papers or pretty accessories like fasteners and threads (Bynd Artisan has all the details covered). Next, once you have picked a design and the relevant materials and accessories, watch as a Bynd Artisan craftsmen brings all the pieces together to create your very own personalised book. You even get to add a foiled stamp of your name on the front cover.
For a more hands-on experience, sign up for one of their bookbinding or leather crafting workshop led by the local Bynd Artisan craftsmen. Last Saturday, I had the privilege of attending their Leather Trio workshop where I handcrafted a leather phone pouch, a card holder and a key ring. Under careful supervision and guidance of their master craftsman, 71-year old Mr Chong, I learnt the basic skills of leather crafting including skiving and stitching. As part of the 3.5 hour, I got to choose the leather colour of my liking (for the aforementioned phone pouch, card holder and key ring) - without giving it much thought I went straight for black and gold (like always).
